Fall into Denim
Jamie Gillingham // October 26, 2011
As a Canadian I feel as though it’s my right to wear as much and as many shades of denim at the same time as I want. After all, it isn’t called the Canadian tuxedo for nothing, am I right? For those of you not lucky enough to be Canadian, I’m afraid your maximum of denim per outfit is limited to just one article (not really, I’m a bit of a Cunuck-centric). This fall season more than ever, I see person after person mix-matching their denims pieces, and it looks great! You may as well be wearing an outfit made entirely from the Canadian flag!
Okay, okay, I’ll stop.
I really believe everyone can look, and feel, amazing in their favorite denim shirt, denim jacket or Levi’s jean – or my personal preference, a combination of the three. There’s just something about denim that draws out your inner Brokeback and makes you feel alive. (To anyone who hasn’t seen Brokeback Montain, watch it. It’s Jake Gyllenhaal denim heaven.)
It’s a common misconception that it takes somewhat of a fashion go-getter to have the courage to wear more than just one piece of denim at a time. “I can’t pull that off!” they’ll say. But it doesn’t have to be like this! Rocking a multi-denim outfit is just as much about the confidence behind the denim as it is the appearance of the look itself. If you feel great, chances are people will think you look great, too! So dig out your moms’s circa-1994 denim jacket and wear it with pride.
I will leave you with one piece of advice, or more of a warning I guess; for the love of all that is Canadian be cautious when attempting to wear the same colour denim head to toe. It can be trendy one minute and hillbilly the next.
(Unless you’re married to a spice girl and look like this)
On the street in Halifax…
This is a great example of a masculine denim jacket that doesn’t give you the urge to round up some cattle. It has just the right amount of things happening – colour, pockets and zippers.
I wouldn’t suggest to just anyone that they head out and pick up a pair of overalls because it’s just one of those things you can’t sugar coat–not everyone can pull it off! But if you have the guts and want to try it out, you might end up looking like this girl – amazing in an outfit where your pants have built in straps.
A denim vest, especially one with this cut, can be an awesome modern twist on what has been considered an otherwise dated look. The pairing of popped collars from both the undershirt and vest, mixed with the homemade key jewelry give this look a casual forward feel.
And, well, if this happened:
What bad can really come from it?
Happy deniming!
