Kelly Lynch // January 4, 2013
Ah, January. New beginnings. I can smell them in the frosty air. The potential for Symmetry articles heightens as we huddle inside to avoid freezing to death in ye olde Canadian winter. Bring on the words.
This month’s theme is career planning. Many PR students are graduating in the spring, and now is the time to really start thinking about where in this wide world of communications you’ll go. You have the training, you have the potential, you have the energy – all kinds of kinetic things! Now to figure out where you’ll fit.
More than just making money, I think the biggest concern most students have when it comes to getting a job is happiness. Ideally, you want an interesting, challenging position that will help you grow, learn and become a better communicator. You didn’t plough through years of a university degree (or degrees) to end up being miserable somewhere as an eternal coffee jockey. But the risk of this being a large part of your job for a while after graduation (if you’re lucky enough to get a job) is probably still high. So don’t get too cocky. I know it’s hard. Type-A personalities. We’re all a bunch of confident, entitled jerks, what can I say?
Here’s the thing: you’re great. You know it, I know it – you just have to convince employers in your position of choice that this is in fact true. “How, Kelly, how do I do it?!” You holler at me, throwing objects near-at-hand, weeping uncontrollably. Well, hopefully this month we can consult the experts, get a bit of insight into what exactly employers in Halifax (and beyond!) are looking for in a PR graduate. Skills, fit, those fashionable thick-rimmed glasses all the kids are wearing. You know, the important stuff.
If you are perhaps investigating your future career options, drop us a line. We want to hear from you.
Happy 2013, Symmetry readers. On behalf of the team, we are glad to have you for another year, and we’re glad to be here. Standing tall on our grammarian legs.
Til next time, I bid you adieu.
