MSVU BPR grad makes top 30 for the MLB Fan Cave
Hillary McLeod // February 15, 2013
MSVU BPR grad April Whitzman has been chosen as one of 30 finalists for the MLB Fan Cave. April’s creative entry video has caught the attention of the MLB Fan Cave judges and even Brandon Morrow, pitcher of the Toronto Blue Jays whom April challenges in her video. Morrow’s 108 strikeouts last season may have some competition. This girl has got quite the arm!
In its third year running, the MLB Fan Cave gives exclusive access to Major League Baseball’s biggest stars and even features appearances from Hollywood celebrities and musicians. This one of a kind MLB-haven is located at 4th Street and Broadway in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village. Cave dwellers post videos, photos and blogs that allow fans to interact with the game in an entirely new way. MLBFanCave.com is for the fans, from the fans.
Those lucky fans chosen as Cave Dwellers will attempt to watch over 2,000 MLB games as well as host fan events, concerts, MLB players and celebrities all while chronicling their experiences. The cave dwellers will also compete against one another in a series of challenges, with fans online helping decide who gets to continue their journey in the MLB Fan Cave. One by one, they will be eliminated until a single winner is crowned before the end of the World Series.
On January 31, April was announced as one of the top 52 finalists. On February 13, fans participated in online voting to choose their favourite submissions, and the Fan Cave judges then picked a top 30 based on fan voting, online buzz and their entry video. April was chosen as one of the top 30 (and the only Canadian!) and will go on with 29 other hopefuls to Arizona to attend the 2013 MLB spring training. In Arizona, the would-be Cave Dwellers will participate in competitions vying for a spot as one of the nine finalists. The top nine will then move to New York City to live, eat and breathe Major League Baseball.
As the owner and operator of JaysProspects.com, April has had the privilege to interview over 200 Jays’ prospects and has spent the summer working for the London Rippers, an independent baseball team. These experiences, and with over 6,000 followers on Twitter, April is a strong representative for the Toronto Blue Jays in the MLB Fan Cave.
“I feel like Joe Carter after he hit the Blue Jays’ World Series-winning homerun in 1992,” said April Whitzman, after she heard she was nominated as one of the top 52 candidates in the MLB Fan Cave. “It’s absolutely an honour to be given an opportunity to fight for the chance to represent the Toronto Blue Jays in the MLB Fan Cave.”
