Dear MSVU students, faculty, and readers:
This time of year brings many transitions from nature’s revival, snow melting, sunnier days, and the winding down of a busy school year. The 2023-2024 semesters brought many surprises, including our first faculty strike in 35 years. We got to experience a unique solar eclipse, many school events and the first normal school year since the start of COVID-19.
Symmetry underwent many transformations this year, including a new website, a publication rebrand and an incredible new team of writers, editors and social media content creators. This year, we also had a new sub-publication – Our alum stories, featuring articles written by our previous Symmetry writers and editors.
Some notable articles
We published 16 student and team articles since September and five alum stories. A recap of published articles includes:
- The importance of queer spaces
- Dispelling dyslexic misconceptions
- The impact of AI on public relations
- Nova Scotia’s ongoing fight against inflation
- Why you shouldn’t get nervous during a job interview
- Striking the right chord: A look at commercial jingles and their viability today
- A call for comprehensive education: Integrating Black History into helping professions
And many personalized stories from dealing with depression, taking care of yourself during the holidays and a celebration of women during International Women’s Day.
A big thank you
There are many people to thank for the success of Symmetry this year. Thank you, Logan Oderkirk, for redesigning our website. Thank you, Jane Landry, Sophia Hong, Katie Redmond, Logan Oderkirk, and Claire Butler, for their alum contribution stories. Thank you, Emma Mccluskey, for your help over the summer for a smooth transition and for co-writing Ten resources for public relations professionals to add to their toolbox. Thank you, Dr. Ellen Shaffner, for all your support and guidance over the past year as Symmetry navigated a new chapter. Thank you to the dedicated students who joined this year and worked hard to keep the publication running smoothly – you are amazing. Thank you to the students who were not a part of the team but still took the time to submit their stories. Lastly, thank you to our readers!
Signing off
I am wishing everyone a restful, safe and happy summer. We will see you all back in the fall for what I can only hope will be another exciting year for Symmetry.
