Got the blues?
When summer comes to an end and the fall air settles in we are quickly reminded of the cold months that lay ahead. We prepare for hibernation and quickly find ourselves on the couch, Cheetos in hand, watching reruns of Arrested Development.
The winter blues – or Seasonal Affective Disorder – is a reality for many Canadians. While for some the effects are minor such as losing a little energy, for others these seasonal blues can turn to serious depression. No matter how it affects you it’s important to find a way to get yourself going again.
Here are ten ways to put those blues to rest:
1. Get outside – Sunshine, even on the coldest days, boosts the amount of vitamin D in our bodies. Vitamin D will help keep your immune system strong and your brain working at its best.
2. Take vitamin supplements – Can’t find time to get outdoors or dislike the cold air? Try taking vitamin D supplements. You can find them in any grocery store or local drug store.
3. Get exercise – It’s important to get exercise all year round but, it’s much harder to find the energy in the winter. Stay motivated by setting small goals and focusing on the benefits. Remember, exercise adds something positive to your quality of life.
4. Surround yourself with good people – If you find yourself in a bit of a slump, turn to some of your closest friends and family. Laugh, have fun and relax.
5. Try a new outlook – As Bob Marley once said, “Some feel the rain, and some just get wet”. Try looking at the winter from a different perspective. Instead of concentrating on the cold air and slush find the positive and accept the season!
6. Change things up – It’s easy to fall into the same old routine. Spice up your life by doing something different; explore a new place, try new food, or take up a new hobby.
7. Drink tea (lots of it) – Tea is, not only relaxing, but contains antioxidants that help boost your energy levels.
8. Take a break from social media – It’s easy to let social media consume us. In the middle of what feels like the coldest winter of your life, sometimes it’s easy to stay in and communicate on Facebook. Studies have shown that too much social media consumption can lead to negative feelings. Take a moment or two and do something that does not require a screen.
9. Take a step back from schoolwork – Don’t forget about it but, when you’re feeling overwhelmed take a moment to yourself. Look up funny YouTube videos, play with your pet, and just take a break.
10. Set goals – Setting personal goals is extremely important. Set a series of goals throughout the winter months, doing so may help you stay motivated and free of those pesky winter blues.
The winter can be daunting but, don’t hibernate this year. Get out, enjoy the cold air, and embrace the season!
