Joining a new society can be intimidating, whether you are entering your first year at the Mount or are a seasoned university student. Societies can help make your university experience enriching and give you valuable and tangible experience. If you like to write, edit, manage social media platforms, web design, or are passionate about public relations here is why you should consider joining Symmetry and make this year even better.
Why join Symmetry
Although Symmetry has traditionally been comprised of communications and public relations students, we welcome all students regardless of their previous writing experience. Symmetry gives students hands-on experience with Canadian Press-style writing, editing, and social media management. Here are a few other reasons to join Symmetry:
- Improve written and verbal communication skills.
- Collaborate with fellow students, alumni, and engage with communications professionals.
- Build your portfolio and resume by publishing your articles on the official Symmetry website.
- We value creating, collaborating, and communicating.
- It is low commitment and flexible.
Joining Symmetry is a way to show employers you are an inspiring professional, especially if you don’t have much work experience or want to stand out on your co-op resume.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Q: What if I am only interested in social media but not writing or editing?
A: No problem! Students can let us know what interests them, and we will work with them to find a position that suits their needs at Symmetry. If you are only interested in editing, you can stick to editing. If you only want to do social media, you can just do social media. It truly is a choose your path here at Symmetry.
Q: How much time a week will I be expected to put into my role at Symmetry?
A: That is up to you. If you have lots of free time, you can write as many articles as you want. However, in previous years students traditionally spent a few hours a month contributing to the publication.
Q: What if I don’t know how to write in the Canadian Press style?
A: That is okay! We are all learners; more experienced students, alumni, and professors are willing and eager to help you grow. We also have editors to ensure all articles are grammatically correct and error-free before publication.
Q: Can I submit assignments I have done for courses as my article?
A: Yes, so long as it adheres to our guidelines, which can be found here.
