A personal reflection on giving yourself care around the holidays

Christmas gifts for mom and dad, check. Decorating the Christmas tree with the kids, check. Dinner with difficult family who like to comment on everything, unfortunately, check. Although the holiday season can be the most exciting time of the year, it can also be the most stressful and tiring. How are you supposed to balance everything you need to do in only a few weeks? Don’t worry, you are not alone in this anxious time of year. You might be overwhelmed with other people that you skip out on taking care of yourself. Here are some tips to keep in mind that I’ve learned when the holidays are getting the best of you:

Take a breath: We can get so caught up with other people that we forget to take time for ourselves. For instance, take a break and plan for some downtime, walk outside, or watch your favourite Christmas movie. This alone can help take your mind off the holiday stress.

Gift yourself: Yes, deciding on the perfect gift for your dad may feel like the hardest decision this holiday, however, don’t forget you. This does not mean you have to buy the brand-new Tesla in Silver Metallic. It can be something small. Take yourself to the new movie you have been eyeing, or simply try a new limited-time seasonal drink at your favourite café. Trust me, you will feel refreshed after.

Set realistic expectations: Have nine family members to visit but only have seven days to complete it? Don’t pressure yourself to have the perfect “The Holiday” movie experience. Do the things you can accomplish, and don’t stress too much over not being able to visit your third aunt twice removed.

Say no: Set boundaries. That is all. You may already hear the ringing of people pleasing ringing in your ear, but remember, you are supposed to enjoy the holiday season too. If you are planning on buying some new tree ornaments and a friend asks to go Christmas gift shopping for their ex they want back in their life, say no or schedule for another time. The last thing you want is to be overcommitted and feel burned out.

Digital detox: I know you love watching your favourite YouTuber unbox all the PR boxes they received and how perfectly wrapped they are, but consider taking a break from the screen and not comparing yourself to other influencers. Constantly being glued to your phone can add unnecessary stress. Therefore, taking some time to feel present can benefit your mental well-being.

Create some new traditions: We all had mini traditions growing up, whether that was setting out chocolate chip cookies for Santa on the big night, or something much weirder like baking 200 “pigs in a blanket” on Christmas Eve. Establishing new traditions can bring joy and new meaning into your life. The good part is you can literally do anything your heart desires.

Prioritizing your well-being is just as important during the holiday season as it is any other time of the year, remember that. Reflecting on the positives that are happening around you and being grateful for the people you can celebrate with will help with the stress. Don’t worry, Santa Claus can sense all the good you have been doing and will treat you right this holiday season!
