Hometown or Canada’s capital: where should you go for co-op?

Whether you’re applying for a co-op this year or a year from now, you’re probably thinking about where you want to be for your first work term. You will hear of people travelling across Canada or even to another country for their co-ops, and it may have you stressed out. Anybody who has been through the co-op process knows it isn’t as simple as just choosing where you want to go. But this is something that a lot of people preparing for co-op think about. Going home or going away can give you many opportunities and maybe even shape the start of your career.

Jenna, a third year bachelor of public relations student, did her first co-op in her hometown in Cape Breton. So, I decided to get her perspective on what initiated her decision to go home.

“Being a student, I looked for every way to save a bit of money, so that’s why I thought it would be best to go home for my first co-op” Jenna said. Money is always going to be something on your mind when deciding on where to do your work term, it doesn’t hurt to consider the money you can save.

Elizabeth, another third year bachelor of public relations student, decided to leave the province and do for her first co-op in Ottawa. She said, “For me, I knew I wanted to try working in a totally different environment from anything I was used to. This led me to search for opportunities in Ontario, and ultimately deciding to accept a job offer from the federal government in Ottawa.” Getting out of her comfort zone is what made Elizabeth’s final decision the best one for her –challenging yourself is a great way to gain experience.

Being in completely different locations did not limit either of these students’ opportunities or how they felt about their time on co-op.

“Luckily, a co-op was posted in my hometown and the job looked like a great fit. I’m glad I had the chance to do a co-op at home because I networked with plenty of people,” said Jenna.

While Elizabeth felt that “making the move was the best choice for me, but I don’t think it is the best choice for everyone.” Moving away for your first work term isn’t for everyone, sometimes your comfort zone can be the best place for you. If you want to push yourself then it doesn’t hurt to try something new!

When it’s time to start applying for co-op jobs, you will have a lot of options to choose from. You can go almost anywhere you want to for work, but the most important thing to keep in mind is if you’re going to love the place or organization where you work. Regardless of your location, doing your co-op somewhere that’s right for you will give you the best experience you can have. Keep location in mind, but the experience from the job should be what determines your final decision It will help you out later in your career!
